As a wedding photographer, capturing the first dance is a moment that can create lasting memories for you and your partner. However, it can also be a challenging moment to photograph, with low lighting and fast movements. Here are some tips and tricks to help you prepare for a great first dance photoshoot:
Choose the right song
The right song can set the tone and mood for your first dance. Choose a song that is meaningful to both of you and that reflects your personality and style. It can be slow and romantic or upbeat and fun, as long as it feels true to you.
If you have something fun up your sleeve, like a choreographed routine, or fun surprise with your wedding party, please let your photographer know ahead of time, so we know that it is coming and can be best prepared to capture those amazing moments.
Practice beforehand
Practice your dance beforehand to feel comfortable and confident during the first dance on your wedding day. This will help you avoid any awkward or uncomfortable moments and create a more authentic and memorable experience.
You can even take it a step further and sign up for a few lessons beforehand. For some couples, having all eyes on them, whilst dancing and trying to be in the moment, can be a lot. Getting comfortable with a few basic steps can alleviate a lot of anxiety. This could also make for some really fun date nights! Dance lesions can be both private, or part of a class with other couples. Here is a link to a local dance studio in London to get started:
Communicate with your photographer
Communicate with your photographer about your vision and expectations for the first dance photoshoot. Discuss any special moments or poses you want to capture and ask for their advice on how to make the most of the lighting and location.
When we photograph first dances, we have a specific lighting set-up that we use which will provide a soft backlit look. This is especially helpful as most venues are dark and the first dance typically happens later in the evening. We use an off camera flash that allows us to move around freely and back lights the couple which creates some stunning images in both colour and black and white. We use this setup for father/daughter and mother/son dances as well. Once the party gets started we make our way through the dance floor and capture everyone’s best and most hilarious moves.
Another helpful tip is to do your best to be in the moment. We get it, the wedding day really is a whirlwind and getting to your first dance, may be the first opportunity you have to chat with your partner after being whisked away all day and greeting your guests. A typical song is 2-3 minutes long, so as your photographer, Iām looking for those special moments during that first dance to capture- a spin, a dip, a genuine smile, a laugh, an embrace etc. If you and your partner are talking this cuts down on my opportunities to get those moments in.
Dress for success
Dress for the occasion and wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. Consider the style and color of your outfit and how it will look in the photoshoot. Avoid wearing anything too restrictive or uncomfortable that could hinder your movements.
When I got married, I had a very fitted wedding gown and it was not the easiest to dance in (cue our Michael Jackson duet after our first song), but I made it work. Many brides opt for two dresses and change into the reception dress for this very reason. Whatever your vision is for your first dance, make sure you practice in your wedding clothes beforehand, to get a sense of what it will feel like on the day of. I absolutely love when brides ditch the heels and opt for something fun, like sneakers. This makes dancing so much easier!

Preparing for a memorable first dance photoshoot takes time and effort, but with these tips and tricks, you can create lasting memories that you will treasure for a lifetime.
