Hey there, beautiful brides-to-be! When it comes to your wedding day, every moment is precious, including those exciting hours of getting ready. As a wedding photographer who has captured countless bridal preparations, I’ve picked up some awesome tips and tricks along the way. So, grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of bubbly), sit back, and let’s dive into the world of creating the perfect getting ready space, where laughter, hairspray, and unforgettable memories are made..

Choose a spacious and well-lit area

First things first, let’s talk about space. When it comes to getting ready, having ample room is a game-changer. Whether it’s a luxurious bridal suite or a cozy corner in your childhood bedroom, make sure there’s enough space for you, your squad, and any family that you would like to be a part of your getting ready photos. Good lighting is essential too! Seek out those glorious natural light-filled spots, as they work wonders for creating dreamy and flattering photos. You will want to ensure that the space is large enough that your photographer can get a full vertical photo of you in your wedding dress. If you have an outdoor space that could also work for formals or shots with the girls, discuss with your photographer ahead of time. I enjoy being able to provide my clients with variety when possible.

declutter and organize like a pro

I recommend that you declutter and try your best to keep the space organized on the wedding day. A clean and clutter-free area will not only look fantastic in photos, but it will also help you stay focused and if you are anything like me, help reduce any stress lol. Designate specific areas for hair and makeup supplies, accessories, and dresses. Invest in some cute storage containers or personalized hangers to add a touch of elegance while keeping things tidy. Don’t be afraid to assign some tasks to your besties as well -like making sure that any random items, clothing, bags, food and drinks/cups have been removed from the room before the photographer arrives. When I get to my first location, I am ready to rock and I cannot tell you the amount of times that I have had to wait for groups to get organized, move furniture or clean up a space. I don’t mind moving a couch (pivot!) but I’d much rather be photographing you! Another thing to consider is what is on the walls. If there are large art pieces or items that you would not rather have in the background of your photos, I would recommend removing those prior to your photographer showing up.

Bring on the details

The getting ready process is all about those beautiful little details that make your wedding day unique. Prepare a special tray with your wedding invitation, rings, perfume, and any other sentimental items you want to be captured. These details add a personal touch to your photos and tell the story of your day. I love snapping these flat lays for my brides and seeing the sweet trinkets or family heirlooms that have been collected. If you want detail shots, I would recommend that you start collecting these items now for your photographer, so they have some fun items to showcase your rings, shoes, flowers, invitations and overall wedding aesthetic. I have seen other brides include fun textiles, perfume, jewelry etc. Get creative! This is also a great way to incorporate your wedding colours into the photos. Flat lays turn out best when photographed in natural lighting on a textured surface, or table. Keep in mind, it takes time to set up these shots and try out different items, so remember to include that request in the timeline.

Embrace robes, pajamas, and matching outfits

We love a good matching moment, so let’s take the fun-factor up a notch! Coordinating robes, pajamas, or matching outfits for you and your squad not only make for adorable photos but also create a sense of unity and excitement. Plus, who doesn’t love a cute and comfy ensemble while sipping mimosas and getting glam? It’s the perfect recipe for a relaxed and joyful atmosphere.

Timing is everything

To make the most of your getting ready photos, timing is crucial. Talk to your hair and makeup artists to create a realistic schedule that allows for plenty of time for both getting ready and photography. Remember, it’s not just about capturing the final look; it’s about documenting the entire experience—laughter, tears, and all those candid moments in between. During this time, I am usually also capturing a few formals with the bride’s family and first looks with moms, dads and the bridal party.

Snacks and sips

We all know that getting ready can work up an appetite. Keep the energy levels high by providing some delicious snacks and refreshing drinks. A platter of fresh fruits, pastries, or finger foods will keep you fueled throughout the morning. Brides, you may not feel hungry and that is likely excitement,, but don’t forget to eat throughout the day and stay hydrated with water.

Relax, Laugh, and Cherish the Moment

Last but definitely not least, take a deep breath, relax, and soak in the joyous atmosphere. Surround yourself with positive vibes, your favorite music (some T-Swift goes a long way in my opinion) and your closest friends and family. Let the laughter flow, the tears fall, and allow yourself to fully embrace the excitement of the day. These genuine and heartfelt moments will shine through in your photos and make them truly unforgettable.
To all you radiant brides out there, creating the perfect getting ready space can be a fun project in itself. By following these tips and tricks, you’ll set the stage for a morning filled with joy, laughter, and countless beautiful memories.

Remember, it’s not just about the final look. It’s also about living in the moment and making the memories that you dreamed about for so long.
