The First Look: A Modern Twist on a Wedding Tradition

As a London-based wedding photographer, I have had the privilege of capturing countless special moments for my clients on their big day. One moment that consistently stands out as a favourite among my couples is the “first look.” We get asked by our clients time and again, if this is merely a trend, or a functional aspect to the wedding day.

For those who may not be familiar, the first look is a private moment between the bride and groom before the ceremony where they see each other for the first time on their wedding day. This moment is an opportunity for the couple to have a few quiet, intimate moments together before the hustle and bustle of the ceremony and reception.

We love the first look because logistically, it provides us the opportunity to sneak in a few photos of one of the most memorable elements of your wedding day. There is so much build up to the big reveal, and it can be so special to plan this moment out with just you and your (almost spouse). I promise you, it will not take away any of those butterflies when you do meet each other at the altar.

The first look has become increasingly popular among couples in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why. For many brides and grooms, the thought of waiting to see each other until the ceremony can be nerve-wracking and emotionally charged. The first look allows couples to have a moment of calm and intimacy before the festivities begin.

In addition to the emotional benefits, the first look can also be a practical decision. Capturing the first look allows for more time for wedding party and family portraits later in the day, as well as providing the opportunity for the couple to take some beautiful, intimate photographs together before the ceremony.

As photographers, we absolutely love capturing the first look. It’s a moment that is filled with so much emotion and raw, authentic love. The reactions of the happy couples are always so genuine and heartfelt, and it’s an honor to be able to capture that for them. While the first look may not be for every couple, it’s definitely worth considering. If you’re on the fence about whether or not to have a first look on your wedding day, I recommend taking some time to talk through the pros and cons with your partner and your photographer.

The first look is a beautiful and intimate moment that truly captures the raw emotion between the bride and groom. I love how Michelle emphasizes the importance of considering what works best for the couple rather than just following a trend. Great advice for all soon-to-be newlyweds!

I love the idea of having a first look to reduce the stress and increase the intimacy before the ceremony. The practical benefits of capturing this moment for more time for other portraits is an added bonus.
